Cow/Calf operation (background 3000 head) in the Sandhills of Nebraska in search of a reliable, all around hand. We are located 12 miles from Arthur, NE (where there is a small grocery store) and 30 miles from Ogallala, NE which has a Walmart. This is not a manager’s position, but we are in need of someone who is a self-starter, has the ability to identify and doctor sick cattle, and can operate pivots and hay during the summer time, (no row crop farming). • Job Reference #1224E

We are looking to hire a self-motivated individual or couple for our operation. We are a family-owned operation where the wife oversees the cattle side (400 head cow/calf operation with a 100 plus head heifer program) and the husband oversees the farming side (2000 acres as well as some custom farming).

We are located near Kimball, SD where Walmart and other large facilities are located 45 plus miles away. Missouri River and the hospital are located around 35 miles away. Kimball school is only 18 miles away and the bus comes to the farm to pick up children. There is a clinic and a visiting dentist in Kimball as well.

    What we expect:

We are mainly looking for an individual, but a couple will be considered. The individual we are looking for is to primarily help with the cow operation, but must also be willing to help with the farming operation when needed. A CDL is not required, but being able to drive a semi is a bonus. Another farm task could require seeding a grazing crop during/after wheat harvest. General maintenance knowledge is required, but being able to weld is also a bonus. On the cattle operation, we operate on a rotational grazing system. Knowledge of this is very helpful but is not required. As with most cattle operations, some of the tasks include calving, relocating cattle, spotting and doctoring sick/hurt cattle, fence building and maintenance, and yard maintenance/facility upkeep. We do expect some basic cattle knowledge, but we are more than willing to teach/send the right individual to school, so there is a better understanding as to why we do what we do, and the way we do things. We would also like someone who can spot potential problems or offer solutions to benefit both parties for improvement and growth in the future.

Here are some guidelines to keep in mind when applying for the position:

    1. This is not a horse position nor a cowboy position. We do have room for a horse or two, but we do not operate horseback around our livestock.

    2. Personal dogs are okay (can discuss details at a later date), but we do not and will not accept cats, under any circumstances. This is due to personal health issues (there is no compromise on this). Our livestock are not and have not been exposed to working dogs, so they may be an option, but we would have to discuss details first.

    3. There is no smoking/vaping in the ranch house or in company equipment (ranch vehicle included). We are willing to work with you as far as having one here and there, but please no compulsive smokers/vapers.

    4. There is absolutely no drinking while working on the clock. We do not mind if you have one here and there, but please keep the drinking in moderation off the clock as things can happen (cattle getting out, needing to drive a vehicle to get to said cattle, etc.)

    5. Answering or making important phone calls/texts are ok in moderation. We understand things can happen, but please do not sit on your phone all day scrolling through social media. While working livestock or around farm equipment, we need your full attention, as anything can happen. If you have a question of if you can be on your phone at the time, please just ask the boss (wanting to snap a quick picture for later, send a text, etc).

Here are some details of the job:

We normally start work around 6 am or 8 am. The end of the workday is normally around 12 pm, 3 pm, 6 pm, 8 pm, and 10 pm (during extreme Harvest/Planting/Calving time). These times are all dependent on the time of the year as well as the weather conditions.

An example of this is on December 10th harvest is done, so we put the cows on the stalks. 8 am would be the start time. We check livestock, check water and grazing conditions (possibly move group or light feed/cake). The end of the workday would be around 12 pm-3 pm.

March 30th Heifer calving (so the start/end times would be different, as well as the day-to-day job duties).

    What we offer:

We do offer a 2021, 16x80 3-bedroom 2 bathroom manufactured home with an attached car port. There is room for 1 vehicle and the ranch provided side by side. There is also a heated 12x14 porch on the opposite door with pet access. Once again, please NO cats. We pay for utilities (other than phone and tv). Pay is determined based on experience and can either be salary or hourly. After 14 months of employment, bonuses and other benefits will be available.

If interested please send all resumes, cover letters, and references to hello@ranchemployersandemployees.com or rafterhangingp5@gmail.
